Text reads: "The tango music of Astor Piazzolla is rarely performed because it is difficult and his scores are not published. Accordionist Tom Montgomery, however, spent years scrupulously transcribing from records the works by the late Argentine composer, whose music manages to be both ethereal and intense. Rock star Steve Miller produced MonTango's debut CD. Hear for yourself..." Joel Selvin, SF Chronicle Datebook

"Few
composers affected the national folk music of their home countries the way
Astor Piazzolla did with the Argentinean tango. In the last dozen or so
years before his death in 1992, the legendary Bandoneon player received
regular death threats for streaming the once vibrant working-class dance
music through the rough-and-tumble filter of experimentation.
Piazzolla's restoration of tango to its Buenos Aires street origins
garnered him comparisons to Johnny Rotten and the punk legend's way with
rock, which only partly makes the point. In contrast to punk's apathy,
tango is about passion - the kind that possessed erstwhile jazz pianist
Tom Montgomery to pick up the Bandoneon soon after he first heard the
master's work in 1996. MonTango, the self titled debut tribute album
by his tango ensemble, captures Piazzolla's craft and adds charmed
nuances. Montgomery winds his Bandoneon vamps expertly around Vanessa
Montgomery's accompanying violin lines, and the album salutes Piazzolla's
many moods and scenarios - in the streets , in bedroom and everywhere in
between. It's a safe assumption that the group should be able to provide
some real fire
onstage." |
